EFFIE

Principal Researcher, Chemical Engineer

Dr Effie Marcoulaki (PhD, MSc, MEng) is Principal Researcher at SRISL since 2008. She holds an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (Greece), and MSc and PhD from the University of Manchester (UMIST, UK). She is a former Research Fellow of EPSRC (UK), and has worked as a Process and Software Engineer in the UK and a Lecturer at major Universities in Greece. Her research activities at DEMOKRITOS include quantitative assessment and management of reliability and risk, occupational safety including risks from nanomaterials, as well as uncertainty quantification, Bayesian statistics, Markov processes, Monte Carlo simulation, stochastic optimization tools for process and material design, and machine / deep learning tools. She is a member of the European Nanosafety Cluster and co-founder/co-coordinator of the Greek Nanosafety Platform. Her research is/has been funded by the Greek, UK, Swiss and USA governments.

She has participated in several EC projects as principal investigator, and served as expert evaluator and technical advisor for EC. European projects on nanosafety include FP7/SCAFFOLD, H2020/‌EC4SAFENANO, and she is now leading the DEMOKRITOS team in H2020/‌NANOINFORMATIX for the development of in silico tools for nanomaterial design. She is also coordinator of SNF/PREDIVIS and H2020/MIDIH/SUPREEMO and leader for DEMOKRITOS in H2020/CLOUDIFACTURING/CLARION, which develop IoT technologies and data analytics for energy efficiency and industrial equipment fault detection. She is a national expert in the CEN/TC 352 Nanotechnologies since 2018, and co-author and appointed expert in the new work item on Safe-by-Design nanomaterials. She has over 50 publications in international peer-review journals and conference proceedings, and over 800 citations.
