Research Director, Chemical Engineer

Dr Effie Marcoulaki (PhD, MSc, MEng) is Research Director at the System Reliability & Industrial Safety Lab of the National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” (NCSR-D) in Greece. She holds an MEng in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (Greece), and MSc and PhD from the University of Manchester (UMIST, UK). She is a former Research Fellow of EPSRC (UK), and has worked as a Process and Software Engineer in the UK and a Lecturer at major Universities in Greece.

Her research activities include the assessment, management and governance of risks, and the development of advanced computational tools for the design of safe, reliable and sustainable processes and materials; using Bayesian statistics, Markov processes, Monte Carlo simulation, stochastic optimization and machine / deep learning. Her research is/has been funded by the Greek, UK, Swiss and USA governments. European projects on nanomaterial safety include FP7/SCAFFOLD, H2020/EC4SAFENANO and H2020/NANOINFORMATIX as principal investigator. She also coordinated the development of IoT technologies and data analytics for energy efficiency and industrial equipment fault detection, with funding from H2020/MIDIH & H2020/CloudiFacturing.

She is a national expert for CEN/TC 352 Nanotechnologies for WG1 and WG3 since 2018, and member of CEN/TC 352/WG3/PG7 Safe-by-Design nanomaterials. Among others, she is member of the UPAC InChI WG for a standard international identifier for nanomaterials / nanoforms, the European Nanosafety Cluster (EU-NSC), the International Network Initiative on Safe & Sustainable Nanotechnology (INISS-nano) etc. She also served as expert evaluator and project monitor for EC, and has over 60 publications in international peer-review journals and conference proceedings.
