Irene Konstantopoulou (F) is currently a Principal Researcher at the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory (MDL) of NCSR “Demokritos” since 2017. She graduated from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki Department of Biology (BSc, 1990) and received her PhD in Molecular Biology & Genetics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1997), where she studied the genetics and evolution of the heat shock protective mechanisms of various species of the Drosophila fruit flies. Αs a postgraduate student she received funding from the National Scholarship Foundation (IKY, 1992-1995), as well as an Erasmus scholarship (1994) for training in advanced molecular biology techniques in the University of Umeå, Sweden. She then pursued post-doctoral research on Cancer Genetics and Hereditary Cancer Syndromes at the MDL of NCSR “Demokritos” (1998-2004), where she was recruited as a staff scientist in 2007 and a Faculty member in 2017. She has gained long-standing experience in the Cancer Genetics field since 1998, as well as international recognition. She has been involved in numerous national and international research projects, has supervised more than 20 student theses and internships, and has more than 80 publications in international peer-reviewed PubMed indexed journals, as well as over 200 presentations in national and international conferences. She also participates very actively in several large international consortia, exploring genetic and other interactions that contribute to cancer predisposition. She is a European Board-certified Clinical Laboratory Geneticist since 2017.
Worldwide, high grade ovarian epithelial cancer (HGOC) remains the most fatal gynecological cancer. In patients with HGOC, the presence of intratumoral genetic heterogeneity is considered an important adverse prognostic factor associated with poor response to treatment and, therefore, poor survival ...
