Dr. Constantina Sambani is Director of Research at the Institute of Nuclear and Radiological Sciences, Technology, Energy & Safety, NCSR “Demokritos” working in the Health Physics, Radiobiology & Cytogenetics Laboratory (HPRCL). Dr. Sambani holds a BSc in Biology from the University of Thessaloniki (1983) and a PhD in Cytogenetics from the University of Athens, School of Medicine (1989). She is a Clinical Laboratory Geneticist registered by the European Board of Medical Genetics (EBMG). She has served as a national representative and member of the Advisory Council of the European Cytogeneticists Association. She is the authorized scientific supervisor of the HPRCL program “Biodosimenty of ionizing radiation and cytogenetics of hematologic neoplasms”.

Dr. Sambani’s research activities focus on investigation of genomic rearrangements in hematologic neoplasms. Her work spans diagnostic evaluation of specimens from patients with hematologic malignancies, to risk assessment analysis and guidance of individually tailored, customized therapies. In addition, her molecular studies delve into the critical mechanisms underlying the multistep process of carcinogenesis. Scientific activities also include molecular genetic studies on gene variants affecting cellular antioxidant response and DNA repair in Health and Disease.

She has published 49 original articles in peer-reviewed international journals, such as, J. Exp. Med., Free Radic. Biol. Med., Haematologica, PLoS One, Cancer Genetics and Leukemia. She is a member of several National and European scientific societies of Genetics and Hematology. She has established scientific collaborations with several European laboratories of cytogenetics and molecular genetics including Center for Hemato-Oncology Research (CREO) and Section of Hematology, Department of Medicine, University of Perugia, where she has worked as a visiting scientist at multiple occasions during the execution of the projects. She has supervised 3 postdoctoral researchers, 5 PhD candidates and 5 MSc students and has been responsible for the design, guidance and supervision of their research projects as well as for the preparation and defense of their theses.

Dr. Sambani is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in the field of Human Cytogenetics and has delivered invited seminars and presentations in European congresses, meetings and several post-graduate courses. She has been the principal scientist and lead investigator of research programs funded by the European Union, the Greek Secretariat of Research and Technology, the private sector and the National Council of Health.
