Dr Gabriel Pantelias is an Emeritus Director of Research at the Institute of Nuclear and Radiological Sciences, Technology, Energy & Safety (INRASTES), NCSR “Demokritos” (NCSRD). He has been the founder and Head of the “Health Physics, Radiobiology & Cytogenetics Laboratory” until 2017. He has previously served as the Vice President of NCSRD and Director of the Institute of Radioisotopes & Radiodiagnostic Products, as well as Director of the INRASTES. He holds a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Athens (1974), and a Certificate of Specialization in Health Physics from the Nuclear Research Centre “Demokritos” (1976). He also holds an M.Sc. in Radiobiology and Health Physics (1979) and a Ph.D. in Radiobiology and Biophysics from the University of Rochester, NY, USA (1984). He has worked as Postdoctoral Researcher at the Laboratory of Radiobiology and Environmental Health, University of California San Francisco, USA, and as Assistant Professor at the Department of Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia, USA. He was the Radiation Protection Officer of NCSRD (2005-2017), a Board Member of the European Radiation Research Society (2011-2017) and also a Board Member of the Greek Atomic Energy Commission (2018-2020).
Dr. Pantelias is a Radiological Sciences Expert who has been appointed by the IAEA to undertake various international missions for educational, research and development purposes in the fields of radiobiology, biodosimetry and radiation protection. His research interests include: investigation of the effects of different quality ionizing radiations at the DNA, chromosomal and cellular level; elucidation of the mechanisms underlying the interaction of radiation with living matter; and the mechanisms underlying radiation-induced carcinogenesis and chromothripsis. He has been actively involved as Principal Investigator in many European and national programmes and research projects, for which he has been awarded considerable funding for his research activities at NCSRD. He has been a reviewer in many international scientific journals, he has published more than 110 original research articles and 170 contributions to proceedings of international conferences. In recognition of his research achievements, Dr. Gabriel Pantelias has been awarded the “Bacq and Alexander Award, 2020” by European Radiation Research Society.
