The National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” hosted on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, a workshop focused on the preservation, interpretation, and digital valorisation of scientific and cultural heritage, with particular emphasis on the GRR-1 Nuclear Heritage Project.
The event brought together distinguished representatives from the scientific community in Greece and China, within the framework of strengthening collaboration between NCSR “Demokritos” and the Tsinghua Heritage Institute for Digitization (THID).
At the core of the workshop is the development of a structured framework for cooperation on the implementation of the Nuclear Heritage Project, which aims to preserve, document, and showcase the historical and technological legacy of the GRR-1 nuclear reactor. The project leverages advanced digital technologies to make scientific knowledge accessible to both the public and the research community.
The collaboration includes:
• the digital documentation of the Research Reactor infrastructure and ambience,
• the utilization of digital tools to highlight the achievements and milestones of the research reactor
• the creative use of digital tools for the engagement of the public and the creation of a living experience regarding the benefits of nuclear technology
• as well as the exploration of synergies with cultural and educational institutions in Greece and internationally including China
The project is structured in distinct phases, including strategic planning, site documentation, and project design and development, ensuring long-term sustainability and impact.
The workshop highlights the role of NCSR “Demokritos” as a hub for international collaboration and innovation, while reinforcing the importance of connecting science, culture, and technology to unlock new pathways for knowledge valorisation.
